The ‘Richmond range’ – from Havelock to St Arnaud
After the fairly relaxed start, on the Queen Charlotte track, a much tougher test awaits us: the Richmond Range.
We hear that this passage may be the toughest in all of Te Araroa. Our route planning states that this will take us 11 days. Even though we read on the internet that there are hikers who do it in 6 to 8 days, we decide that we will allocate the full 11 days for it. To begin with, we are not yet in top shape (we only have 6 walking days in our legs) and we also hear that this tour is very beautiful, so why would you want to walk through it so quickly. In short, we buy food for 11 days, charge our batteries, put it in our backpack and hit the road. We put our stuff in waterproof bags, because a lot of rain is predicted.
We don’t quite get what we were predicted, because it all turns out to be much heavier and more spectacular than we could imagine. What did come true was the weather forecast, namely rain every day but not all day. So we changed a lot with the rain clothes. Jill made a super investment by buying a lightweight umbrella. She ingeniously clips it to her backpack, so that she can often walk without a raincoat.
Only the first night we sleep in a tent, because after that we use the many ‘backcountry huts’ that New Zealand has. More about these cabins later.
The first days we mainly walk through the woods of the Richmond forest. We are also ‘spoiled’ with bridges over the rivers, because they are no longer there after a few days. You then cross a river by just walking through it, very often several times a day. In the fast-flowing rivers, this is often a risky undertaking. And in any case we don’t keep our feet dry, but that appears to be quite normal here.
Sometimes the weather is really good. Also on the day we walk over the ridge to mount Rintoul. That produces some nice photos.
